Description: Areas identified as urban by the Census Bureau, meeting the criteria set forth for the 2020 Census using population and housing unit density. Areas with a population from 2,500 to 4,999 have been removed. These areas are the starting point; the building blocks for creating the adjusted or smoothed Urban/Urbanized Areas. The final adjusted Urban/Urbanized Areas must be approved by FHWA before they can be used or considered official. The Census Bureau's urban areas are NOT the urban areas to use for transportation planning purposes. These urban areas have not been adjusted by IDOT or the local agencies and have not been approved by FHWA.
